Innovation of the Year 2023

On September 25, 2024, at the SEECEL building of the University of Zagreb, the prestigious “Innovation of the Year” award was presented to an international team for their work on the innovation “Innovative Composites Based on Bio-Waste”. The award-winning team included Carlos Manterola-Barrosa, Gabrijel Ondrašek, Jelena Horvatinec, and Christian Merino-Gergichevich.

The annual “Innovation of the Year” award is given to a commercialized innovation, recognizing the advancement and promotion of innovation and creative thinking, with the goal of boosting innovation and competitiveness in the Croatian economy.

During the Innovation Forum, the Was2Grow project—an innovative initiative focused on converting bio-waste into sustainable hydroponic solutions—was also showcased. The project was presented by Prof. Gabrijel Ondrašek PhD, the project leader, along with project collaborator Jelena Horvatinec, MSc.

This recognition highlights the importance of innovation in fostering sustainability and economic growth in Croatia.
